The covenants with Assyria would be exactly analogous to the one they had with Yahweh. The Israelites would be involved in pagan sacrifices and pagan rites. They were in effect repudiating their covenant with God and making alliances with fake deities. One illustration of ‘empty oaths’ was that taken by Hoshea, Israel’s last king. He entered into covenant with the king of Assyria (2 Kings 17:3), but then some time later broke his oaths to Assyria and turned to Egypt instead (2 Kings 17:4). It was
